Mercury Retrograde
Is Mercury in retrograde? Exact dates of every Mercury retrograde from late 2026 through 2027, shadow periods, signs, and what astrology says to do.

Mercury turns retrograde four times between late October 2026 and October 2027: from October 24 to November 13, 2026, in Scorpio; from February 9 to March 3, 2027, in Pisces and Aquarius; from June 10 to July 4, 2027, in Cancer and Gemini; and from October 7 to October 28, 2027, in Scorpio and Libra. Each period lasts about three weeks. The exact start and end times, in Eastern Time and UK time, are in the table below, along with the “shadow” weeks around each period that astrologers also watch.
After the dates, this page explains what retrograde means in the sky (Mercury doesn’t really reverse), what astrology traditionally says about it, and how to use these weeks calmly.
When is Mercury retrograde in 2026 and 2027?
A retrograde period starts when Mercury “stations retrograde” (appears to stop and turn back) and ends when it “stations direct.” Here are the four periods that touch the coming year:
| Starts (ET) | Ends (ET) | Sign | Length | UK dates |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sat, Oct 24, 2026, 3:09 AM EDT | Fri, Nov 13, 2026, 10:57 AM EST | Scorpio (21° back to 5°) | 20 days | Oct 24 to Nov 13 |
| Tue, Feb 9, 2027, 12:36 PM EST | Wed, Mar 3, 2027, 7:35 AM EST | Pisces, back into Aquarius | 22 days | Feb 9 to Mar 3 |
| Thu, Jun 10, 2027, 2:16 PM EDT | Sun, Jul 4, 2027, 3:38 PM EDT | Cancer, back into Gemini | 24 days | Jun 10 to Jul 4 |
| Thu, Oct 7, 2027, 10:34 AM EDT | Thu, Oct 28, 2027, 10:12 AM EDT | Scorpio, back into Libra | 21 days | Oct 7 to Oct 28 |
The dates are the same in the UK; only the clock time shifts (five hours later than ET for most of the year).
Taken together, Mercury spends a little under a fifth of the year retrograde: 18.4% of 2026 and 18.3% of 2027. That’s roughly one week in five, which is worth remembering when a headline makes it sound rare or dramatic.
Mark four windows in your calendar: late Oct to mid-Nov 2026, Feb 9 to Mar 3, Jun 10 to Jul 4, Oct 7 to 28, 2027.
Is Mercury in retrograde right now?
Check today’s date against the table above: if it falls between a start and an end date, Mercury is retrograde; otherwise it’s direct. If today sits in the shadow weeks listed in the next section, astrologers would say Mercury is “in its shadow”: moving forward, but over ground it has covered or will cover backward.
The station days themselves, when Mercury looks almost motionless, are the ones astrologers treat as the most intense. On those days Mercury moves only a fraction of a degree.
The table answers the question for any day through October 2027.
Shadow periods: the weeks before and after
Before each retrograde, Mercury passes over the stretch of the zodiac it will later retrace backward; after the retrograde, it crosses that stretch a third time. Astrologers call these weeks the pre-shadow and post-shadow. They’re computed from Mercury’s exact positions at the two stations.
| Retrograde | Pre-shadow begins | Post-shadow ends |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 24 to Nov 13, 2026 | Oct 4, 2026 | Nov 30, 2026 |
| Feb 9 to Mar 3, 2027 | Jan 25, 2027 | Mar 23, 2027 |
| Jun 10 to Jul 4, 2027 | May 26, 2027 | Jul 19, 2027 |
| Oct 7 to Oct 28, 2027 | Sep 17, 2027 | Nov 13, 2027 |
Tradition treats the pre-shadow as a time when the themes of the coming retrograde start to show, and the post-shadow as the time when they settle.
If you plan around Mercury, the shadow dates give you a softer edge on each side of the retrograde.
Why does Mercury seem to move backward?
Mercury never actually moves backward. It is the planet closest to the Sun and laps the Earth roughly three times a year. When it swings between us and the Sun on the inside track, our line of sight makes it look, against the background stars, as if it slows down, stops, drifts backward for about three weeks, then stops again and resumes. A passenger in a faster car sees a slower car seem to slide backward in the same way.
Each period is bounded by two stations, the moments when Mercury’s apparent motion along the zodiac crosses zero. The times in the table are those moments, computed to the minute.
Retrograde is a matter of perspective from Earth; the planet keeps its course.
What does Mercury retrograde mean in astrology?
In astrology, Mercury rules communication, messages, contracts, short trips, commerce, learning and technology, and it’s linked to the signs Gemini and Virgo. When it’s retrograde, tradition says those areas slow down or need a second look: emails go astray, plans need revising, old conversations resurface.
The most useful reading of the tradition is the “re-” words. Retrograde weeks are said to favor review, revision, repair, reconnection and rest, and to be less suited to launching something brand new. Astrologers who take it most seriously advise waiting to sign a major contract or buy new electronics until Mercury is direct; others simply recommend reading the fine print twice.
Mercury retrograde is part of the regular rhythm of the sky, three or four times a year. Nothing about it is a bad omen.
Read retrograde weeks as a time to review and finish rather than to start.
What should you do during Mercury retrograde?
Practical habits help whether or not you follow astrology:
- Double-check the details: times, addresses, names in emails, booking confirmations.
- Back up your phone and computer before the start date.
- Finish what’s already open instead of launching a new project mid-period.
- Get back in touch with someone you’ve lost track of; tradition says the timing is good for it.
- Give yourself margin on trips: leave earlier and keep confirmations handy.
And what to skip: there’s no need to cancel plans or freeze decisions for three weeks. If something important must be signed during a retrograde, read it carefully and sign it.
Use the period to tidy up, calmly.
How does each retrograde affect your sign?
Astrologers read each period through the signs it crosses. Over the next twelve months:
- Scorpio (October to November 2026) and Scorpio into Libra (October 2027): a period for honest conversations, revisiting shared plans and agreements, and, in Libra, rebalancing relationships. Scorpio and Libra natives tend to feel these most, according to tradition.
- Pisces into Aquarius (February to March 2027): dreams, intuition and creative projects come up for review, then friendships and group plans. Pisces and Aquarius feel it first.
- Cancer into Gemini (June to July 2027): home, family and memories in Cancer, then everyday communication, siblings and errands in Gemini, Mercury’s own sign.
Gemini and Virgo, the two signs Mercury rules, are traditionally said to feel every retrograde. To see how Mercury fits into a daily reading for your sign, go to the horoscope today page, which also lists each sign’s dates.
Look at the signs in the table: tradition says the retrograde speaks first to those signs.
Mercury, the Moon and other cycles
Mercury’s rhythm runs alongside the Moon’s. During the June to July 2027 retrograde, for example, the full moon of June 18 falls during the period, eight days after it begins, and readers who follow both often treat that full moon as a natural moment to let go of whatever the retrograde has stirred up. The moon phase page explains the rest of the lunar cycle, and if a number keeps appearing during these weeks, the angel numbers guide reads it alongside.
Combine cycles if you like, but one at a time is easier to follow.
How were these dates calculated?
Stations, shadow dates, signs and the share of the year come from PyEphem, an astronomical library, run on October 13, 2026: Mercury’s apparent geocentric position in the tropical zodiac, with times in America/New_York (EST or EDT as applicable) and UK time. Stations are located to the minute. Different sources can disagree by a few minutes on a station time because Mercury barely moves at that moment; the date is what matters.
The dates are computed; the meanings are astrological tradition.
Key takeaways
- Mercury retrograde dates: Oct 24 to Nov 13, 2026; Feb 9 to Mar 3, Jun 10 to Jul 4, and Oct 7 to Oct 28, 2027.
- Mercury is retrograde a little under a fifth of the time (18.4% of 2026, 18.3% of 2027).
- The motion is apparent: Mercury overtakes Earth on the inside track.
- Astrology reads these weeks as a time to review, repair and reconnect, not to panic.
- Shadow periods add two to three weeks on either side.
Three weeks of double-checking, four times a year: very manageable.
